John Martin MacVean, Phoenix, passed away on September 16, 2019 at Brookdale Desert Ridge Memory Care, Phoenix, Arizona. He was the husband of Sharon A. (Hart) MacVean. They shared 51 years of marriage together.
Born in Watertown, New York, he was the oldest son of Stanley and Beatrice (Kavanaugh) MacVean. He graduated from Carthage High School and attended Rochester Institute of Technology, both in New York, before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served four years and was stationed in Newfoundland, Canada; Miami, Florida; and San Diego, California. After leaving the service, he graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College in New York before accepting a position as an electronics engineer at GE, Honeywell and Bull, all in Phoenix. He received his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in 1969.
He loved hunting, fishing, sailing, canoeing, hiking, camping — anything outdoors and anything electronics — as well as family gatherings. He was friendly and outgoing and loved being called “Big John.” He was a member of Cross in the Desert United Methodist Church and was also a former Boy Scout.
He is survived by his spouse; son Christopher (Karyn) MacVean of Glendale; daughter Lynne MacVean (Frances Wiget) of Phoenix; grandchildren Malcolm, John and Caroline MacVean; brother Jay (Barb) MacVean of Gahanna, Ohio; sisters Judith (Tim) Pressler of Marysville, Ohio; and Jane (Frank) Engstrom, Gilbert, Arizona. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Jacqueline Brezinski and brother-in-law Vaughn Hart.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Cross in the Desert United Methodist Church, 12835 N. 32nd St., Phoenix 85032. Inurnment will follow at 12:30 PM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix 85024. Luncheon in church Fellowship Hall at 1:00PM.
