A funeral or memorial service is not just for them, it’s for you too. It affirms the relationship you had and leads to healing after your loss. Taking the time to design a funeral or life celebration is a loving act, and not a difficult one. With our help, we invite you to explore the seemingly infinite ways to remember and celebrate a wonderful life lived, with you or your loved one as the leading character of this transformational and healing experience.
Funeral Arrangement Conference
To assure that one of our funeral directors is immediately available and can devote the personal attention and time needed to make the arrangements, we would request that you call to schedule a convenient arrangement time. Although the vast majority of funeral conferences are handled at one of our locations during normal business hours, we are available to come to your residence. One of our funeral directors is always on duty 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
When you come to make arrangements, please bring the following items:
- Social Security card or legal document containing the Social Security number of the deceased
- Military Discharge Papers (Form DD214)
- Cemetery property documents
- Immediate family member names and contact information
- Recent photograph for newspaper obituary preparation purposes and identification
- Clothing – all normal items and undergarments. Shoes are optional. For women, an outfit closed at the neckline and long sleeves are preferred.
- Jewelry and personal items – these items can either be brought to the arrangement conference, or on the day of the visitation
- Copy of contract – if pre-arrangements were made
At the funeral arrangement, vital information for completing the death certificate will be needed. Certified copies of the death certificate are legal documents and issued by the State of Arizona Vital Records office. Photocopies are not considered legal documents. After the original certificate has been signed by the physician or medical examiner and all vital information complete, it is then filed on your behalf.
We will ask you how many certified copies of the death certificate are needed and order them for you. Here is a list of those situations that may require certified copies:

- Stocks, Bonds, and other investment funds
- Financial Accounts
- Safe Deposit Boxes
- Credit Cards
- Vehicle, Mobile Home, Boat and Trailer Title Transfers
- Life Insurance Benefits
- Health Insurance
- Civil Service Federal Employees
- Personal Income Tax
- Employee Retirement Account
The State of Arizona will provide one free copy each for Social Security and Veteran Benefits.
Although we strive to be of assistance to our families in any way we can, Hansen Mortuaries is regulated by the State of Arizona and can only obtain certified copies on behalf of the following individuals:
Surviving Spouse, Mother, Father, Son, Daughter, Brother, Sister, Grandparents or Cousin. All other persons wishing to apply for certified copies of the Death Certificate must apply within 30 days of death directly to:

It’s often seen as easier to not have a funeral or memorial service, and its certainly seen as a less expensive alternative. But in all our years of experience helping families through this difficult time, we can honestly say an easier, cheaper path is not always the better one. Grief experts all agree: a funeral or memorial experience plays a critical role in helping family and friends heal after the loss of a loved one. Without that chance to come together, to draw support from family and friends, to cry and laugh, to reminisce about all the great times together and to remember a wonderful life lived, a void will be left that extends the grieving process.
Hansen Mortuaries offers several types of services, including traditional and graveside funeral services, cremation services, and memorial services.
The Traditional Funeral Service is when your loved one is present. Many times, a visitation will be held the night before the funeral, in one of our chapels, a church or synagogue and generally with the casket open. The funeral service unusually follows the next day. A funeral service may consist of scripture reading, prayers, eulogy, sermon and music. There are also funeral services of a non-religious nature. The service can consist of music, readings, and poems with friends and family sharing memories of the deceased. After the funeral service there is a procession to the cemetery to have a committal service.
A Committal Service is a brief service at the grave site prior to the burial. This is where family and friends say their final goodbyes by placing flowers or sometimes sand on the casket. After the committal service, a reception can follow at the mortuary, church or the family’s home.
The Graveside Service is held at the cemetery, without any visitation or other services prior to the graveside. The service typically includes scripture readings and a eulogy. After the service there is often a reception.
The Traditional Funeral with Cremation to follow is when friends and family are invited to a ceremony to pay their respects to the deceased and offer condolences to the family. A visitation provides time for sharing and remembrance and is followed by a funeral ceremony at a place of worship or in our chapel. Following the service, the deceased is transported to the crematory for cremation.
Cremation with a Memorial Service is when the deceased’s urn is present along with family photos and memorabilia. This is a time to remember your loved one through fellowship with friends and family.
Simple Cremation does not have a remembrance ceremony. After all the necessary paperwork and documentation is completed, the deceased is transported to the crematory. The cremated remains are then placed in an urn and ready to be buried, placed in a niche or taken home. Often, a committal service is performed as the deceased is placed in their final resting place.
Celebration of Life or Life Celebration ceremonies are modern terms used to describe this alternative to the traditional funeral service. This Memorial Service provides a time and place to remember and talk about the life of a loved one. These ceremonies are often scheduled days to weeks after the death for the convenience or needs of the family. Some may choose to have a Celebration of Life ceremony on the year anniversary of the death. A delayed memorial service can give the family time to plan a beautiful tribute to their loved ones life.
This type of service may include many elements of a funeral: eulogies, music, prayers, readings, video tribute, balloon and dove releases, poetry or other prose and symbolic elements to honor the life of the deceased.

Today, the term ‘funeral’ can mean many different things. No longer are funerals completely religious in nature or strict in their structure and content. In fact, many families want to plan services that reflect all facets of an individual’s life and can be conducted in a way that is as unique as the person being honored. Funerals allow a place for people to gather and offer emotional support to one another. They provide a climate in which family and friends can share both their sorrow and feelings about their loss. The process of healing can begin when you gather to reflect and celebrate your loved one’s life.
Traditional Funeral Services
Traditional funeral services tend to refer to ceremonies occurring within the funeral home and/or church in which the deceased’s body is present. A family may chose to have the casket open or closed as well as arrange for visitation times the day before or just prior to the funeral service itself. Many families have opted to add personal components such as music, DVD Tributes and other elements to such services in addition to religious or spiritual content. Traditional services typically conclude with burial at a cemetery or cremation at a later time.
Celebration of Life Services
A Celebration of Life, or Memorial Service, is a ceremony conducted at the funeral home, church or other venue in which a casket is not present. Families can opt to display an urn, photos, flowers, candles and personal mementos as a way to represent their loved one. Such services may or may not include religious content, and certainly allow for unique and personalized opportunities to honor the deceased. Like traditional services, music and live musicians, DVD Tributes and personal stories are encouraged and welcomed.
Formal Gatherings are an opportunity for families that would like to have a way to come together in support of a loss, but do not want to have an organized service. Much like a visitation, a Formal Gathering allows the public to come and go throughout a designated time at the funeral home and as such, allows the community to express their feelings and thoughts with the family. These gatherings also allow for unique tributes and personalization and often are catered to create a sense of home and comfort.
Private Family Gathering
Families that opt to not have a public service for their loved one may still want to spend a brief moment of time with the deceased before burial or cremation occurs. These ‘private’ gatherings provide the opportunity for a few family members and close friends to say ‘goodbye’ and seek closure in a comfortable funeral home environment.
Funeral Directors and arrangers are used to planning events in a limited amount of time. Due to their great amount of resources and experience they often help families plan ‘events’ to honor a loved one in unique and unusual settings. Whether it is at a home, museum, restaurant, fraternal club, art space, garden or theatre, a funeral home can assist in all aspects of organization, ideas and details. The options to pay final respects to a loved one are limited only by the imagination.

“Six Simple Weeks” is a grief support group offered free to the public courtesy of Hansen Mortuaries. This class offers support, discussion and exercises to give insight into the grief process and help move your healing along. These are interactive sessions and include many tools and additional resources to help you on your grief journey.
Each Six Week series is open to new participants for the first two meetings. New groups begin every two months through-out the year.
The series is facilitated by Dr. Sandra Howlett, Bereavement Specialist with 15 years experience in grief support.

Memorial Print and Media
Memorial Folders or Service Folders are typically used as printed information given out at Funeral or Memorial Services. Photographs, poems and verses are often used to customize a folder. The many sizes and styles available, allow each design to be unique and a fitting tribute to your loved one. Our creative artists will work with you to produce the perfect end result at an affordable price.
Forget-Me-Not Flower Seed Packages are a unique and popular way to pay tribute to a loved one. Each package contains “Forget-Me-Not” flower seeds that can be planted. When the beautiful flowers bloom, warm and loving memories of your loved one are sure to brighten the day. Each design is different and personal; let our talented staff help personalize some for you.
Prayer Cards are a popular way to memorialize a loved one. There are many different “pre-printed” designs that personal information can be added and of course, Prayer Cards can be custom designed with a favorite verse, photo or scripture printed on both sides.
Video Tributes – A very popular way of sharing the many memories of your Loved One, is a “Video Tribute”. A video is created by scanning 60 – 80 of your favorite photos, formatting them into a slide show that tells a story of memories. The video usually has favorite or special music that is played in the background.
