John Micsko’s kindness, generosity, and infectious sense of humor were treasured by all who had the fortune of knowing him. He always put others before himself and touched the lives of so many. With personality to brighten any room, thoughtfulness to lift any spirit, and perfectly-timed inappropriate jokes, he could bring a smile no matter the time or place.
Growing up in New Mexico, John was active in the Boy Scouts for many years and enjoyed it thoroughly. He attended Eldorado High School in Albuquerque where he was a member of the National Honor Society, lettered in track and football, and graduated valedictorian of his class. John then went on to attend the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He then moved to Arizona in the late 80s.
John was a self-made, successful business owner. For over 30 years he owned and operated By The Yard, an interior design store in Tempe, Arizona. He will be remembered for his tremendous work ethic by colleagues and customers. When he wasn’t working, John loved spending time with his family at their cabin in Forest Lakes, Arizona, or planning the next big event or party to be hosted in his backyard. He was an avid outdoorsman, with a lifelong love for hunting and fishing.
During the Christmas season, one of his passions was dressing up as Santa Claus and distributing gifts to children. Even during his last Christmas when he was quite ill, he was adamant about doing this for the children’s cancer ward in the hospital where he received treatment. Sharing his time and love is what brought him true happiness.
John was always a joy to be around—no matter the circumstance, you would never find him in a bad mood. Even as he was fighting a long, difficult battle with cancer, he was always more interested in his friends and family. He will be forever remembered in our hearts as the most loving husband, father, brother, “Pa,” uncle, and friend. He has left a profound imprint on all he knew—he is deeply missed.
He is survived by his mother Louise; wife Helena; children Michael, Jennifer (Jonathan), Sarah (Arthur), John “Little John” Jr.; stepchildren Sarah (Matthew) and Lies’l (Taylor); sister Michelle Micsko (Steve), their children Hunter and Haley; aunt Emma; grandchildren Artie, Ellie, Naomi, Leo, Raquel, and Nora. He was preceded in death by his father John F. Micsko.
