Carolyn Cassels, 86, passed away August 1, 2019. She and her husband of 38 years, Bill (passed in 1989), were married January 6, 1950. Carolyn worked at their grandparents’ service station while attending college. One of their customers who paid monthly always talked about her son in the U.S. Navy. When he was home on leave, he brought his mother to the station to pay their bill. Carolyn saw Bill and Bill saw Carolyn. Before his 2-week leave ended, they married in the Methodist Church.
As a young Navy wife Carolyn received an allotment that she saved. Whenever Bill was home on leave they used the money to travel – Prescott 1958, Sedona 1962, Phoenix 1964. Carolyn and Bill both worked for the phone company until the boys Billy (1953) and Ward (1956) came along. The family moved to a ranch in Prescott in 1958. They had dogs and horses and the house was at the top of Ball Whacker Hill. Carolyn returned to work at the phone company when they moved the office to Sedona. They put up the first Christmas lights in Sedona on the phone company business office. Upon returning to Phoenix, Carolyn was hired at Central Arizona Project (CAP). After twenty years and one more baby, Daniel (1971), Carolyn moved on to State government, ADOT, retiring in the early 1990’s. As an avid reader, she volunteered at the Glendale Public Library and eventually became a paid part-time employee. She left only after funding for the position was dissolved. This was her favorite job. She got bored, again, and went back to work at the City of Phoenix Convention Center, Theaters Division. Finally retiring for good in 2008 at the age of 76. Of course, she still didn’t stop working – she volunteered at John C. Lincoln Hospital. She has often said she “loved to work”.
Grandchildren: (Billy) – Missy, Cassy, Dessy; (Ward) – John, Robb; (Daniel) – Nicolette; Great-grandchildren: (John)-Aubriann, Cameron; (Missy) – Alex; (Cassie) – Catherine; (Dessy) – Lincoln, Bethany; Siblings: Sandra, Joann, James (deceased)
She lived a varied and interesting life, she would have liked to return to England and Scotland.
