Catherine Staats

Cathy (Millard) Staats departed this world on February 22, 2011 at the young age of 42, following a courageous and inspiring two-year journey with a malignant brain tumor known as a Glioblastoma (GBM). She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Toby Staats; children, Jacob (13), Sarah (11) and Tommy (6); Parents-Dan and Darlene Millard; Sister- Terri (Jeff) Wold; Brothers- Greg (Mary) Millard and Tim (Terri) Millard. Her mother-in-law, Bette Staats, loved Cathy as her own daughter and along with all of Cathy’s family, in-laws and dear friends helped support Cathy, Toby Jacob, Sarah and Tommy during the last two years. Cathy will forever be remembered for her constant display of unending faith in our Almighty God that defined her journey in terms of a special mission she knew she was meant to carry out for the benefit of others. Certainly her family saw the power of her faith in action but as her journey exceeded the original poor prognosis for a GBM by weeks, then months and now years, it became clear to so many others as well that she was walking with the grace of our Lord. Trusting her fate to God’s ultimate plan taught us all what prayer really means. Cathy grew up in the Sunnyslope area of Phoenix before moving to Scottsdale in 1982 to attend Scottsdale High School (the year it closed) then graduating from Coronado High School in 1986. She obtained her Associate of Arts Degree from Scottsdale Community College then earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Arizona in 1991. Cathy met her future husband, Toby, while both were attending UofA and in 1992 started their life together in Holy Matrimony. Cathy developed a very successful career first as a fashion design buyer for Dillard’s Department Stores, then as an Account Manager for Daymon Associates and finally as a Territory Manager for LabCorp. In 2004, she landed her ultimate dream job as a stay at home Mom following the birth of her youngest son, Tommy. She found it her natural calling to be the best Mom imaginable. Always involved in the community of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Desert Willow Elementary School and Cub Scout Pack 134 (collectively known as “the Community”) before her illness, Cathy thrived on the opportunity to be with the kids at every opportunity possible. Throughout all of her interactions in the community, Cathy developed a wonderful reputation as a person who could always light up a room with her beautiful smile and genuine kindness. In fact, it is Cathy’s contagious smile that most everyone remembers as the essence of the joy and faith that defined her. The passing of this amazing woman at such a young age has left a deep wound in the hearts all who know her. She will be terribly missed and loved forever. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in her honor on Saturday, February 26th beginning at 10:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church located at 11300 N. 64th Street, Scottsdale, AZ. 85254. A reception to celebrate her life will immediately follow in the church hall. All who knew and loved Cathy are welcome to attend. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Valley (www.hov.org). Cathy was a special person. She and Toby helped me in the childcare facility at Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church when Jacob was attending preschool. She and Toby were always more than willing to do their share. I am sure that she has a special place in heaven. Please accept my condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with Toby and the children.

Our daughter Senya, sits at the same table with Tommy in his first grade class and was in Kindergarten with him as well. We have ony heard nice things about Tommy, a clear reflection of what great parents have raised him. We extend our deepest sympathies to your family. Senya’s Daisy Scout troop will also be bringing a gift basket by as the girls were very touched by Tommy’s loss.

There are no words that can come close to what is felt when such a beautiful, sweet lady is taken so young. Cathy was a beautiful person inside and out. I too worked with her in the PetSmart/Daymon does and we enjoyed lots of laughs together. With her strong faith, she will continue to shine her light on the world.

To all who loved Cathy, my heartfelt prayers and condolences. To the very end, Flip and I were praying for a miraculous recovery for Cathy, not just for her sake, but for her beautiful family and for the sake of those who watched as she persevered in faith. I will always remember her warmth and her smile, but I will also hold dear the memories of talking with her and Toby about the goodness of God, of His mercy, His reality, and the forgiveness found in Jesus. Cathy was as special soul; now she is a special daughter to the Most High. Remember that even Jesus wept at the death of a friend, but know also with confidence that Cathy has been received into a place of peace, peace never ending, and now lives with her Lord and with all the saints who entrusted their lives to Him.

Our hearts go out to all of Cathy’s loved ones. You are in our prayers. As I read the obituary, I couldn’t help but think what a lovely, inspirational tribute to Cathy and those who loved her.. It is evident that the Millard and Staats family “entertained an angel in their midst.” May God continue to hold you all in the palm of His Hand. Barbara and Dick Hackett

Even though I had not seen Cathy for many years, I am so saddened by the passing of one of my “girls”. Cathy was a student of mine at Coronado High School. She was not only a beautiful person, she was a beautiful dancer. She was a member of our CHSazz line, which at that time, and now, is our top dance line. The competition to be a member of this group was difficult. but Cathy persevered and did wonderfully. It looks like that’s how she managed her life. She was gracious, sweet, and oh that smile! But even with her tender appearance, she was strong and had a great sense of humor. I’m sure she touched many lives and and influenced more with her gentle spirit. My heart goes out to her husband, children, family, and dear friends. My sincere condolences. God Bless you all. Irma Griffin Coronado High School Dance Director/Fine Arts Chair

Cathy, the world is darker now without you. There can be very little said in these horrible days to provide comfort, but know that you married the exact right person, that you were surrounded by family unparalleled in their support, and that your three wonderful children will continue on to make the world a better place. God bless you, I am at a loss for any more words, other than to say we’ll miss you and never ever ever forget your life.
