Darrell “Poppy” Preston, Jr. was called home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ January 30, 2019 at 7:30pm. He was surrounded by family, which he so dearly loved. He was taken to the hospital Sunday January 27th and was diagnosed with acute leukemia and congestive heart failure. He surrendered to the effects of these diseases at Ryan House Hospice.
Darrell was born May 2, 1926 to Darrell Merwin Preston and Leona Hutchinson Preston in South Colton, New York. He served as Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged May 17, 1946 and married his other half, Doris Preston, on May 17, 1947. Darrell was trained as a Bricklayer, Mason and Plasterer, belonging to the Union in both New York and Arizona. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1958 where he raised his family and rededicated his life to his Lord. He served as a deacon in their home church for many years.
Darrell was preceded in death by his father Darrell, mother Leona and four brothers: Ralph, Ted, Keith and Merton. He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Preston; brother Ronald (Shirley); son David (Lisa); daughter Luan (Ron); grandchildren: Darrell, Michelle (Eric), Uriah (Jackie), Gavin (Nikki), Gregory (Jenn), Vince (Allison) and Rebekah (Josh); and 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; as well as many other “children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren”, not related biologically or through marriage, but that he drew to his heart.
A service to celebrate the life of Darrell Preston, Jr. will be held at 4pm Saturday February 16, 2019 at North Mountain Church, 10202 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85020. Reception immediately following.
