Posted By Carrie Franklin On June 28, 2019 @ 3:40 pm In Obituaries | 23 Comments

John Mallaburn Jr, aged 77 years, of Scottsdale Arizona went to heaven on Friday June 21st, 2019 at Hospice of the Valley Sherman Home in Scottsdale. He was surrounded by his loving family when he lost his long battle with cancer.

John was born to John Mallaburn Sr. and Ina (Topull) Mallaburn, on April 8th, 1942 in Johnston City, Illinois. There he lived a modest childhood as the son of a coalminer and a homemaker/hairdresser. He joined the United States Navy in 1959 and served aboard the U.S.S. Springfield – first a guided missile light cruiser then the flagship of the Commander, 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.

After his discharge from the U.S. Navy, he worked various jobs until he found his calling to further service at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office beginning in 1973. In 1980, he met Janice Severns (married December 30th, 1981). John and Janice Mallaburn worked together at MCSO and raised three sons. They enjoyed years of camping, fishing and travel as a family. After retiring as a lieutenant in 2011, John divided his time between his recently purchased summer residence on the Central Oregon Coast and his home in Scottsdale.

John is survived by his wife Janice (Severns) Mallaburn, his sons Dax Mallaburn, Barrett (Milica) Mallaburn, and Carter Mallaburn. He had the privilege of being Poppy to his three grandsons: Ethan Mallaburn, Jacob Mallaburn, and Liam Mallaburn. John is also survived by his only sibling, his sister Ruth Ann (Mallaburn) Wright and her daughter, John’s beloved niece Lisa Ann (Wright) Lane who he lovingly referred to as “Bugs”.

About their father, each son has something special to remember and praise him for. His eldest son Dax will always remember his wise words and abiding love, and wants his father to rest in peace and know he’ll never forget him. Barrett thanks his father for his guidance in life and being a great Poppy to his three sons. His youngest son Carter is grateful for his father and for his commitment in all aspects of life, as well as his selfless acts of courage and love.

His wife Janice thanks him for loving her unconditionally, for their life together, and for the memories she’ll hold dear for all time.

The family plans to schedule a Celebration of Life in the Phoenix area sometime later this year. Notification to all will be made.

‘And I’m leaving my family
and I’m leaving my friends
My body’s at home
but my heart’s in the wind
Where the clouds are like headlines
on a new front-page sky
Shiver me timbers
I’m sailing away’
