Joyce A. Shears, of Phoenix, AZ passed away peacefully on November 20, 2018. Born August 3, 1937, she was raised in Otsego, MI where her parents owned Shears Dairy. After receiving degrees in Physical Education and Administration at Western Michigan University, her 40-year career consisted of program and executive management at the YWCAs in Kalamazoo and Detroit, MI, Maricopa County, AZ and property manager of the Bellair Association of Glendale, AZ. She was a true leader, planner, and forward-thinking executive whose door was always open and a listening ear available.
Under her Executive Directorship in Kalamazoo many new programs were developed and implemented including the rape crisis, drop-in mental health, and domestic abuse centers.
While YWCA Executive Director in AZ, Joyce was responsible for five program centers plus developing the residence program for Women in Transition and many changes in the agency properties.
Joyce was preceded in death by her partner Billie Clark; her parents; and brother Arthur Shears. She is survived by two sisters-in-law Alice Shears and Cheryl Clark; and many loved nieces and nephews.
A memorial and committal service to honor a life well-lived will be held in Michigan at a later date.Print Obituary & Condolences
