Mary Ellen Cavanagh
Posted By Jackie Andrews On April 28, 2018 @ 3:47 pm In Obituaries | 17 Comments
Our loving sister Mary Ellen (Lou) went to her eternal reward April 16, 2018. She leaves behind siblings Kathy, Loretta and Daniel; many dear friends; and thousands of former students whose lives she touched through a lifetime of teaching.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, she grew up in Phoenix and was a graduate of ASU. She enjoyed gardening, design, and playing cards, but her life-long loves were education and travel. After retiring from the Washington school district, she combined her two loves by accepting a librarian position at an elementary school in Izmir, Turkey. On weekends you could find her on the ferry to Italy or on the train to the Grand Bazar. Sister Loretta was her favorite travel companion as they toured the world from Argentina to the Greek Islands.
She is preceded in death by parents John and Cecilia Cavanagh, and older brother John Lawrence Cavanagh. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, May 5, at 10:00 AM at Green Acres Cemetery, 401 North Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85257.
Offer Condolence for the family of Mary Ellen Cavanagh
I am so sorry to hear about the recent passing of Maryellen. She was a dear soul and will greatly be missed. Mary Hagenmaier
My prayers and thoughts are with those Mary Ellen leaves behind. We attended X.H.S. together and I remember her infectious laugh and smile. She’s a special soul and I’m grateful she was a part of my life. She will be remembered with joy.
My thoughts and prayers are with the love ones Lou leaves behind. I will always be grateful to Lou for giving me the opportunity to teach at Acacia. She was part of the interview committee that hired me 23 years ago. As a new teacher, Lou was very supportive and a great role model. Lou’s laugh and excitement for education was contagious. I recently saw Lou when she subbed for a teammate.
Mary Ellen was a special and sweet lady. Went to Xavier with her and have many fond memories of our times together. My what an adventurous lady. Sounds like a fantastic life Although have not seen much of her over the years I will miss her. She is a loss to all who had the privilege of knowing her and being the recipients of her love and caring.
Miss you dear friend. I know you are in Gods arms.
I am saddened to hear of Lou’s passing. I remember her fun-loving, adventurous spirit at Xavier. So sad

I worked with Lou in Izmir and was on many of those ferry rides to Greece and train rides to the bazar with her. She returned to Turkey for my wedding and was such a shining light every day. She is deeply missed and grieved.

Always in my heart. SEV Izmir English teacher
I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of Lou’s passing. We were colleagues in Izmir and spent many happy times together. She was a wonderful human being – bright, gregarious and loving. She lived a life full of fun and adventure. I am sorry we never got to say goodbye…Dear Lou, you will be greatly missed.
My sincerest condolences to the family of “Lou”. I did not know her, but from this obituary and the notes left here, she sounds like an amazing person.
I know this is not the place for this, but it was the only way I could find to contact her family. As you can see, we share the same exact name. I have been contacted by several people regarding your sister’s property here in AZ, so please respond here with the best way to reach out.
Thank you. Again, my apologies for your loss, and for this tactless method of contacting you.
