Mary Edna (Toller) Fijan

March 17, 1924 - October 30, 2021

Mary Edna (Toller) Fijan, 97, of Phoenix, AZ died Saturday, October 30, 2021 of natural causes. Mary was born in St. Joseph, MO to Mary Edna (Burke) Toller and Lawrence Joseph Toller on St. Patrick's Day, 1924. She was the first of five children. The family settled in St. Louis, MO. Mary graduated from Rosati- Kain High School, then received her RN from DePaul Hospital School of Nursing. Mary met the love of her life, Dr. Kenneth Fijan during the time he was treating her mother in the hospital. They married June 16, 1951 and moved to Lincoln, NE, raising three children with Mary providing support and assistance for Kenny in his ever growing Pediatric practice.

Mary had a passion for life. Everything she was involved with, whether it was homeroom mother, cub scouts, head of adoration at the local Catholic Church, ministering to the disadvantaged, providing loving advice and guidance to many or spearheading charity events was done with drive and determination. Mary loved a night out with Kenny and friends for dinner and dancing. Anything with family was a priority, but she also was a lifelong bridge player, traveler, and party aficionado!

Retirement in 1986 brought Mary and Kenny to Tucson, AZ. Tucson was filled with making new friends, Arizona Wildcats basketball and traveling around the country visiting family and friends. Mary remained in Tucson after Kenny's passing in 1998 keeping busy with her many friends and participating in activities with her church. In 2009 Mary moved to Phoenix to be closer to family.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Kenny Fijan, 3 brothers and 1 sister. Mary is survived by her three children; Patty (Kent) Gilmore, Dayton, MN; Jim (Gwynne) Fijan, Phoenix, AZ; and Dan (Charlyn) Fijan, Whittier, CA; 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services and interment have been held in Phoenix, AZ at Hansen Mortuary.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Paradise Living Center as well as the staff at Companion Hospice Care.

Until we meet again mom!
