William Martin (Chip) Richards passed away in his home August 2, 2019 at age 62.
Chip was born September 30, 1956 in Fallbrook, CA to Ruth & E. A. (Bud) Richards.
At age 17, he entered Perdue University, where he studied from August 1973 to December 1976, before entering the U.S. Air Force for 4 years, rising to the rank of Sergeant. In 1986, he earned his BA degree in English at Lyon College in Batesville, AR.
After graduation, he worked at Abacus Programming Corporation in California before moving to Phoenix, AZ in 1989, where he worked as a software engineer at Honeywell Industrial Automation and Control for many years.
An avid supporter of computing and Open Source Software, Chip was an early and active contributor and leader on FidoNet and was known internationally on the Internet for numerous projects, including the Lumen GUI Toolkit, Internet Ray Tracing Competition, support for the Ada programming language on the #ada channel, and for his use of and contributions to the Linux platform.
Due to his interest in the Esperanto language, when he formed his own small business specializing in computing, software, and Web design, he gave it the Esperanto name NiEstu, “Let Us Be”.
Chip was preceded in death by his brother, Andy, his parents, Ruth & Bud Richards and his wife, Donna. He is survived by his sister, Sharon.Print Obituary & Condolences
